Thank you for planning to attend this year's Sunset Run for Refugees. We are so excited to see you on June 20th! There is no need to present an Eventbrite ticket or RSVP to participate in the event. We should have a great crowd and are approaching enough participants to fully engulf the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool with candlelight after sun down on the evening of World Refugee Day.
We run for all refugees, migrants, and their families. And while this is a nonpartisan event, we cannot ignore what is happening in the world and here in our nation with respect to the treatment of refugees, migrants, and all humans fleeing desperate and dangerous conditions. Thank you for coming out to join the caravan of light and hope. Please invite your friends and family to join us so that we can send a beautiful and impactful message of support from the nation’s capital on World Refugee Day. HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU COME OUT TO JOIN US:
Aim to arrive at GW’s Elliott School of International Affairs in Foggy Bottom (1957 E Street NW) between 7:00 and 7:45 PM. You will quickly be assigned a caravan group, and we’ll get you moving on a run (3 miles) or walk (1.75 miles) to the Reflecting Pool within 10 or 15 minutes of your arrival. The last caravan groups will depart Elliott School around 8:00 PM.
The check-in tables are through the center lobby doors at Elliott School. As you walk in, you will check-in, sign a waiver, receive a free LED candle, caravan group assignment, and additional information about the event. Walkers are welcome. While this is the Sunset Run for Refugees, we are proud to welcome non-runners (and their families). To this end, we have a special walking route set up this year!
The formal vigil portion of the event begins at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool (lower stairs, just before the pool) at 8:30 sharp. At 8:30, there will be brief program of speakers, which will include refugees. Prior to 8:30, there will be music provided by our guest DJ. We will all proceed out along the Reflecting Pool shortly after 8:45, and the entire program at the Reflecting Pool should be over no later than 9:10.
Consider bringing a water bottle. There are water fountains at the Elliott School and around the Lincoln Memorial, but we encourage you to bring your own refillable bottle to have with you throughout the event.
This event happens rain or shine! Please consider the purpose of this event and the extreme and treacherous conditions that so many refugees and migrants face around the world today. Let’s send a strong message of light and hope from our nation’s capital on World Refugee Day. Every candle on that Reflecting Pool matters. You matter. They matter. #WithRefugees
There is a bag check. A complimentary bag check will be provided, staffed by volunteers. Please try to avoid leaving any valuables at the bag check.
Restrooms. There are restrooms at the Elliott School and directly underneath the Lincoln Memorial (as well as other locations around the Reflecting Pool).
We’re still looking for event volunteers. If you think you might be able to help as a volunteer, use this link to sign up http://www.slyreply.com/app/sheets/f6y07ecyaxvo/
For most roles, you can volunteer and still fully participate in the event.
Please consider making a donation to refugee relief. This event is free, but we hope our participants will consider making a donation to help refugee relief efforts around the globe, whether you ultimately attend the event or not. You can donate here https://secure.actblue.com/donate/run4refugees18
There will be a gathering following the event at Penn Social in the Penn Quarter neighborhood downtown. Penn Social is a 21-and-up venue, so you must bring your valid photo ID to get in. Penn Social is accessible by all Metro lines and is located at 801 E Street, NW. Also, please note that the Penn Social kitchen closes at 10:00 PM. Chips and salsa will be available for purchase after that time. Website: http://www.pennsocialdc.com
Please see maps below for the running and walking routes.
