To the Sunset Run for Refugees community,
For the last three years, the Sunset Run for Refugees has been proud to host hundreds of local runners, joggers, walkers, and families from the Washington, DC community in a special event to commemorate World Refugee Day. In light of the social distancing restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will now be hosting an all virtual run/walk for our fourth annual Sunset Run for Refugees. While we won’t be able to gather at the Reflecting Pool this year, that won’t stop us from uniting as an online community in support of refugees around the globe. Refugee communities need our support now more than ever, and we are eager to come together to empower each other to action in a unique and impactful way.
With this new format, we are excited for the opportunity to create a stronger movement beyond the borders of Washington, DC. From June 14th-June 20th, we encourage all of our participants to engage their communities in a virtual run or walk leading up to World Refugee Day and shine their own light wherever they may be. You can choose to complete the 5k over the course of the week leading up to World Refugee Day, or you can do it in one day! Simply post pictures or videos of yourself completing the 5k on social media (sunset photos and candles highly encouraged!), and don’t forget to use our hashtags! #SRR20 #RunForRefugees
This year, we are also excited to offer race swag! This year, we are also excited to offer race swag! Technical race shirts and bibs will be available with each registration with the proceeds going to the Sunset Run for Refugees, and registrations completed by May 18th will be guaranteed to receive their swag by the race week of June 14th so you can rep it in support of refugees leading up to #WorldRefugeeDay on June 20th! Registrations made up until June 20th will receive their shirt and bib once the event concludes. If you choose not to purchase a shirt, we highly encourage a donation of $10 or $20 to one of our highlighted organizations.
As part of your participation, we ask that you support organizations working to aid refugee populations around the globe, Alight, Save the Children, International Rescue Committee, and CARE. Your donations will provide aid directly to these organizations, working to protect the most at-risk refugee communities around the globe, especially during this global pandemic.
